I used CAPS English Home Language with the focus being listening and speaking for this lesson, presenting a comprehension on a PowerPoint presentation on Blackboard Collaborate. During the lesson, I used a whole class, teacher-guided approach with question-and-answer techniques. Peers were encouraged to participate throughout the lesson. Using an online assessment tool named Mentimeter, peers were assessed. Although the assessment tool was inadequate and difficult to manoeuvre, the lesson itself went well and I still got relevant feedback from my peers which was one of my objectives. Also, Blackboard Collaborate, the online platform used to communicate with my peers worked well, but there was a component I could not utilise because at the moment I needed to use it, it was unavailable (poll).

What did you dislike about online teaching?

This was a new experience for me, therefore at first, I was on edge, not knowing how will I come across to my peers and supervisor. Even though I had practised a few times, I found that working with the online space was tricky and it could sometimes become really difficult as the applications did not always work out well. The thing I disliked the most was not being able to see the people I was teaching which made it difficult to see whether they were all paying attention during the whole lesson.

What new skills did I learn through this experience?

I learnt how to adapt to an online space using a much more technology-integrated approach to teaching and learning. I was able to learn how to use various types of assessment applications and I learnt that the online space for teachers is just as difficult as it is for students/learners.

What would I do differently?

I would make use of a different online assessment tool because the one I used was difficult for my peers to use. Additionally, I found it confusing while I was using it during the lesson. Also, I will make use of more colour in my slides to accommodate learners' technology-integrated and get them more involved in the lesson.

Did I choose appropriate tools to teach my online lesson?

I made use of a PowerPoint presentation to present my rationale and lesson. This tool I found very convenient and appropriate for the lesson as it portrayed everything needed to both my peers and supervisor. However, the assessment tool used was not appropriate as my peers found it difficult to use and I could not figure out the tool during the assessment.

How does this experience develop you for teaching in a school?

This experience has made me aware that there will be instances when a teacher must adapt to any given situation, whether it is using technology in the classroom, or using an online space to teach. The world is moving to a technological age, therefore it is compulsory for teachers to be equipped with the skill of technology.

You were able to communicate effectively and engage with your learners throughout your lessons with discussions and effective questioning and answering techniques. I thoroughly enjoyed your lesson, and I enjoyed your assessment tool that you used. It was unique and very easy to utilise.
