Life of a Teacher

Description of what happened

I was placed in the position of being a teacher for 3 days. During my first block, the experience was very challenging as the responsibilities given to a teacher were numerous. Providing me with support, my mentor guided me through the responsibilities and duties which were required of me during these days. Being placed in this position in the first block was more challenging than in block 2 because I was still getting to know the school and classroom environment, and the learners were still getting to know me. However, upon my return to block 2, I found myself feeling a lot more confident in practising those vital roles and duties as an educator. I felt that it taught me many key aspects which are vital to being an effective teacher. These include classroom management, lesson and classroom planning, climate control and punctuality.

Feelings (How did I feel and think? How did the learners feel?)

In a nutshell, I would perceive that the learners really enjoyed having me as their teacher for the three days. The learners enjoyed their activities and the lessons I had planned for them. During my time as the 'life of a teacher', learners participated willingly and enthusiastically towards their school work as well as through modes of classroom discussions on content and knowledge. Although at times I found that the learners became rowdy quite often. This happened because during block 1, my first day of life as a teacher was done on the school's fun day. Learners were in a fun and energised mode which set the tone for the rest of the day. I planned an exciting art lesson where I allowed them to listen to music while they did their art. This stimulated their concentration and creativity. In block 2, for my 2nd and 3rd days, I practised these lives of teacher days toward the end of the term, so the learners were beginning to stay absent and the curriculum was already complete. For these days, I ensured to create an eventful learning experience by having a computer day for the learners which they really enjoyed. On the last day of the life of a teacher, I planned another art day where learners spent a lot of time creating and painting volcanos.

Evaluation and analysis

Critically reflecting, I would say that the 3 days went well, considering all the factors which played a role, learners gained the knowledge or skills I taught them all the while, enjoying what they doing. However, to be honest, I found it difficult to manage them, especially during the fun day. Classroom management is one of the key factors of being an effective teacher, and to me, very important. Therefore, it is a quality I am still working on as a developing teacher. Administration can also be daunting, however, if a teacher is able to be punctual by being time-proficient, then she will be an effective teacher in the making. And this is what I strive for!

Conclusion

Overall, it was a great experience to be put in this position. I had an amazing mentor who gave me the reigns to be myself and explore my abilities as a teacher, but at the same time gave me guidance on the important aspects concerning the school's requirements and what it takes to be an effective teacher. I found that the learners became more receptive towards me as my time in the school progressed, and I built relationships with some of them where I know, they will remember me for a long while. I know now that there is no other profession for me and that this work is built on the backs of teachers who strive for excellence. That is what i strive to be - an effective teacher!!
